Who Owns What on Television? [New]
All those hundreds of TV channels may lead you that there's a true diversity and variety in today's television … but you'd be wrong. A handful of large companies control what you see, hear, and read every day. Let's take a look at who owns what on television – here are the TV channels owned by 6 of the largest companies in media, as depicted by their logos...

The Mount Vernon Statement [New]
I joined a broad coalition of conservative leaders representing a wide spectrum of the movement including fiscal, social, cultural and national security conservatives, to sign The Mount Vernon Statement. In light of the challenges facing the country and the need for clarity, we needed to produce this defining statement of conservative beliefs, values and principles. It is the culmination of a thoughtful deliberation about our nation's principles.

States United for America: Restoring the United States Of America [New]
It is all too obvious that the "power" of the vote is not working. With no term limits, the culture of corruption and abuse has changed OUR Federal Government into a National Government Oligarchy, no longer representing "We The People" as a whole, rather representing self and special interests in the name of Political Correctness, Social Engineering, and Centralized Power! They have taken complete control of our states, using OUR money and Constitutional loopholes to justify "their way or the highway." The States actually have the power under Article 5 of the Constitution, NOT to be confused with a Constitutional Convention, to stop the TYRANNY! They are either ignorant of this and how it works or lack the fortitude to take action. Are you aware that We The People are being denied our constitutional right to an Article V Convention to propose amendments, despite a whopping 750 (or more) Article V applications from the state legislatures of ALL 50 states? Now it falls on our shoulders, the experienced American patriots, to let our state know we are behind it. That we will be there for and support it in every way. That we will accept no less than a complete return to the values instilled in the original Constitution and the Bill of Rights, realizing that neither would have been possible without The Declaration of Independence.

Is there a greater willingness to sign up for income redistribution programs from one state to another? [New]
by Daniel J. Mitchell
The Center for Immigration Studies recently put out a study arguing that immigration has had negative effects on California. One of their measures was a comparison of how many people in the state were receiving some form of welfare compared to other states. I found that data (see Table 3 of the report) very interesting, but not because of the immigration debate (I'll leave others to debate that topic). Instead, I wanted to get a better understanding of the variations in government dependency. Is there a greater willingness to sign up for income redistribution programs, all other things being equal, from one state to another? The "all other things being equal" caveat is very important, of course, since the comparison produced by CIS may simply be an indirect measure of the factors that determine welfare eligibility. One obvious (albeit crude) way of addressing this problem is to subtract each state's poverty rate to get a measure of how many non-poor people are signed up for income-redistribution programs. Let's call this the Moocher Index.

Are you a conservative? Or are you, instead, a Classic Liberal? [New]
by John C. Goodman
Basically, classical liberalism is the belief in liberty. Even today, one of the clearest statements of this philosophy is found in Jefferson's Declaration of Independence. At that time, as is the case today, most people believed that rights came from government. People thought they only had such rights as government elected to give them. But following the British philosopher John Locke, Jefferson argued that it's the other way around. People have rights apart from government, as part of their nature. Further, people can form governments and dissolve them. The only legitimate purpose of government is to protect these rights. People who call themselves classical liberals today tend to have the basic view of rights and role of government that Jefferson and his contemporaries had. Moreover, they do not tend to make any important distinction between economic liberties and civil liberties. The Bill of Rights proclaims that individuals have "rights." But what does it mean to have a right? Are some rights fundamentally different from others? In the classical liberal tradition, rights have several characteristics...

07/27/09: Conservatives need to develop a Culture of Resistance [New]
by Myrna Sokoloff
Americans voted for "change we can believe in" not the dismantling of the capitalist system in favor of a state run economy. Many independents and Republicans said in justifying their support for Obama in the belief that he was a pragmatist not an ideologue. He would use the smartest people to come up with the best solutions to the problems facing us. Those of us who said he was a leftist radical were ridiculed. But actions speak louder than words.
All this has made me conclude that the Left had the right idea about protest. They have always been better at it than our side. It's a group thing. Conservatives prize individualism. So it is against our nature to do this. But we can learn from their success.
The Left now controls the government. The radicals that were the counter-culture are now the establishment. Therefore conservatives must create a "culture of resistance" and become the counter-culture. We must resist the authoritarian system. We must call for "freedom". We must demand choice in health care, freedom from taxes that fund programs we don't agree with and freedom to celebrate the religious heritage of our country. We must also say loudly "you don't speak for me" when the President does not put the national interests of the United States first! Our "culture of resistance" must be an aggressive constant thorn in the side of the new radical establishment. Let's see how the Left likes being on the other side of the barricades!

05/22/09: From Teflon To Tarzan, The '30s Proved Capitalism Never Sleeps [New]
by W. Michael Cox
An intriguing aspect of today's economic mess is renewed interest in the Great Depression, the calamity that engulfed most of the world in the 1930s. Digging a bit deeper...we find there's more to the story of the U.S. economy in the 1930s. Telling it even briefly provides some messages relevant to what we're going through today. The 1930s confirm how free enterprise economies unleash human creativity and initiative. Determined, resourceful entrepreneurs who believe in their dreams, work hard and refuse to accept the prevailing pessimism have a chance to succeed in good times and bad. The 1930s remind us of the power of technology to drive progress. A critical mass of inventions and innovations combines with capitalism's profit motive to speed the introduction of new products and industries. The 1930s show that markets function well even when under stress. The Great Depression's pockets of progress teach us that free enterprise systems can offer opportunity and improve living standards even in the worst of times. 04/14/09: The Department of Homeland Security is warning law enforcement officials about a rise in "rightwing extremist activity" [New]
by Audrey Hudson and Eli Lake, Washington Times
A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines "rightwing extremism in the United States" as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority. "It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," the warning says. The document says the federal government "will be working with its state and local partners over the next several months" to gather information on "rightwing extremist activity in the United States." The FBI was quoted Monday as saying that, since November, more than 7 million people have applied for criminal background checks in order to buy weapons. Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center added that he was generally pleased with the report. "Basically, the report tracks fairly closely with what we have been saying for some time now. They mention us a couple of times, though not by name," he said.

04/13/09: Time for Conservatives to Stop Financing the Left [New]
by Richard A. Viguerie and Mark Fitzgibbons
Many liberals despise us conservatives, but they sure love our money. How is it that they get our money? Well, many liberal and supposedly non-ideological nonprofits receive taxpayer funding. In return, they support big government, and oppose conservative values and policies. Taxpayer-financed charities have become sycophants for corrupt politicians and the big-government machine that give them our taxpayer dollars. But it's more than a matter of politics. Conservatives can do two things to buck this, instead giving money to those who support our interests:
(1) stop contributing to charities that receive taxpayer money, and
(2) stop contributing to big-government Republicans who fail to halt the flow of our tax dollars to liberal nonprofits.

Founding Bloggers...in order to form a more perfect blog [New]
Anachronistic as it may be, we hold that there can be little doubt that the Founders and Framers of these United States would have been cyber-savvy, laptop-toting, wi-fi enabled electronic pamphleteers, and it is in this spirit that we have named this forum. Our hope is that Founding Bloggers will play a role, if only a modest one, in the greater political discourse, as not only a venue for the advocacy of those ideas which have made possible the greatness of these United States of America--of political and economic liberty, of small and limited Federal government, of the sanctity of the individual, unfettered by statism, and of the importance of preserving and defending these ideas for future generations--but also as a repository for comments and observations by like-minded and otherwise intellectually engaged Americans. We maintain that within a popular political culture dominated by sophistry and demagoguery, the force of Reason, girded by the lessons of history, and allowed to operate unhindered, may yet prevail. With this in mind, and with these ideals as our touchstone, we venture forth into the often murky terrain of contemporary political conversation, and hope, with humility and optimism, that our endeavor is accomplished in a manner that would make Our Founders proud.

Without exaggeration, the history of America, the greatest country this planet has ever known, is at risk. What history that isn't being rewritten or erased by those in Washington is being forgotten by our children and grandchildren. Here at Founders' Keepers, our mission is a simple but profoundly important one: We Remember. Some of our regional leaders commit to memory the entire works of a given Founding Father…what they wrote, when they wrote it, and why…how they lived and dressed…their habits and their families…the ordinary lives of these extraordinary Americans. Others assist in that work, and a greater number still work in any way they can to help preserve and restore this nation to her former greatness.

Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it."
